Talenthouse: My Soundgarden 2013 Short List

Band photography is something I've always wanted to get into a bit more, but haven't for various reasons over the years.

Back in the 1980s and 1990s, working with film, the lighting issues were just too annoying to deal with. However, these days, digital cameras are just much more light sensitive, and then there is the ability to vary ISO per shot, not per role, so that helps a lot. Also, being able to review the shots on the spot is tremendously helpful in these situations, because I can keep firing away until I know I've captured what I've been aiming for.

This last year, when I started taking cameras around with me pretty much everywhere, it was only natural to start taking some shots at shows, and I have been happy with the results.

I really like playing with the stage lighting, good performers do interesting things, and I can get some of the good, blurry but nice weird effects that I like, giving me a lot to play with in editing.

This last year, time and budget kept me from making it to many shows. Hopefully 2013 will give me plenty of new opportunities to continue developing my technique with live band photography and to build up a more solid portfolio in this area.

Further wisdom from Caustic… Art is hard and it takes time

More wisdom from Caustic. Worth a read. Nothing here that any serious artist of any flavor hasn’t spent a lot of time contemplating, but it is always good to check in and be reminded of these things.

A good pep talk for those who do and a sign post for those who want to do…

Caustic: Doing Stuff is HARD: Putting in the Time:

There's a belief amongst artists that it takes 10 years or 1000 hours working on a craft before you're actually any good at it. That says a couple things to me:

1) Giving up means you're automatically screwed, and
2) Tenacity equals success

Most it means you/I/they have to work your/my/their asses off to succeed in whatever creative world we live in.

Wisdom from Caustic... Your Words Dumb: Lyrical Mediocrity in Stompy Goodness

I've been meaning to link this up for a while. This is the latest in a number of posts he has made here and there on what I would, for a lack of better words and for the bonus of sounding like a pretentious twit, call the "Theory of Industrial Music."

When I saw the picture of these shirts that just came in, it reminded me to get off my ass and share this wisdom with the masses.

Your Words Dumb: Lyrical Mediocrity in Stompy Goodness:
Sometimes I think that's because I've been around a while and just like the stuff I like, but I've come to realize that not only do I think the music itself has gotten overwhelmingly samey and boring, the lyrics are fucking HORRIBLE.

Yes, I know, every song isn't meant to be epic and change the world. No, but does that make rhyming "fly" and "sky" and "try" (or "hate" and "fate"...or "head" and "dead") any less pathetic? Does that make obvious, contrived metaphors (if we're even lucky enough to GET ANY) any less terrible? Does that make "shocking" lyrics which are mainly shocking at how amazingly EMBARASSING they are any less cringe-inducing? No.

It's not just the simple rhyme schemes, as that's not the most important thing, but the SENTIMENT in most of the shit nowadays is so simplistic and dumbed down that a first grader would understand it. Is that really the audience you envision in your mind?
